Vancouver Chinese Drama Society (former Vancouver Mandarin Drama Society)
Founded in 2016 by Artistic Director Iris Han, we brings the magic of Chinese drama to global audiences, proudly backed by mentors from Beijing People’s Art Theatre. As a local non-profit multicultural art society rooted in Vancouver, our members span the ages of 4 to 70, embodying our sincere artistic care for both teenagers and the elderly. We uphold the core mission of inheriting Chinese drama culture, integrating into the local multicultural ecosystem and serving community cultural development. We elaborate on Chinese drama works infused with local cultural elements and stage them for the entire community in bilingual presentation. We build diverse platforms for drama competitions and professional performances for local teenagers, and actively participate in multi-ethnic joint performances organized by community groups. Taking art as a vital bond connecting Chinese and other ethnic residents, we enrich the spiritual and cultural life of the community, facilitate the inclusive coexistence and prosperous development of Vancouver’s multiculturalism, and make sustained contributions to the local community cultural development..
Our journey began with the classic show "Ruan Lingyu", a critically acclaimed debut that sparked sold-out tours across Vancouver and Toronto. In 2022, VMDS defied the odds during the pandemic to stage "Sunrise" and "Internet Celebrity", injecting fresh energy into Vancouver’s cultural heartbeat. That same year, "Thunderstorm " swept through Vancouver and Victoria, fueled by roaring community support.
2024 marked a milestone: "The Late Chirstoper Bean" became the first Chinese play with English subtitles at Vancouver Playhouse, winning over diverse crowds and setting a new bar for comedy. Looking ahead, 2025 promises two timeless BPAT classics and an original children’s production—all crafted with passion. Open to actors of all ages, we invites you to join its vibrant quest for stage excellence!
Coming November 2026 Grand Production: The Sun Yat Sen Stay Tuned~
